She describes the project as a fusion of her anthropological insights and artistic curiosity, where she seeks to “bridge the gap between past and present.”
By reimagining Nghwenyama, Dr Birdie aims to honour the legacy of Mhani Madyakubomba while bringing new life to the traditional sounds of South Africa. Collaborating with a diverse group of musicians, including producer Ziyawakazitha Matsenjwa from Eswatini and guitarist Djivas Madeule from Mozambique, the song celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Southern Africa.
The project also features contributions from South African talents such as bassist Gally Ngoveni and percussionist Thabang Tabane.
Dr Birdie expressed immense gratitude to Mhani Madyakubomba’s family for supporting her vision. In particular, she thanked Mhani’s son, musician Brian Bomba, for his guidance throughout the project, as well as her brother Maxwell Baloyi for helping her access the traditional music archives.
Now available on all digital platforms, Nghwenyama is the first single from Dr Birdie’s upcoming album Matimu – Footprints In Nature.

Although this is her debut album, Tribute has already carved her niche as a performing artist, having serenaded audiences in Qatar and Dubai in the Middle East, where she took up an artist’s residence playing with a jazz band featuring some of South Africa’s top musicians. The talented Mpumalanga-born jazz artist says she could not be separated from her love of music and teaching and couldn't pick a side.
The 31-year-old will from next month lecture first and second-year students at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
"I have been appointed as a lecturer in nature conservation, teaching ecotourism biology and environmental conservation to BTech students and, in the second semester, I will be adding other subjects.
"I am really excited about the challenges of teaching because I have been a student once and I know how students can be: they can press your buttons! But I am looking forward to sharing my experiences."
Her new journey as a teacher has not deterred the musician from her musical path as she is currently cooking the deluxe edition to her debut album and prepares to tour.
