Charlene[1] (French: Charlène[ʃaʁlɛn];[fn 1][2] born Charlene Lynette Wittstock, 25 January 1978) is Princess of Monaco as the wife of Prince Albert II. Before her marriage, Charlene was an Olympic swimmer representing South Africa.

Charlene was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She relocated to South Africa in 1989. She began her swimming career in 1996 (winning the South African Championship) and represented South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, with her team finishing fifth in the 4 × 100-metre medley relay. Charlene retired from professional swimming in 2007.

Charlene met Prince Albert at the Mare Nostrum swimming competition in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in 2000.[1] The couple married on 1 July 2011. Charlene Lynette Wittstock was born on 25th January 1978 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Africa.

When she was aged 12, her family emigrated to South Africa.

CAREER

She developed a passion for swimming at a very early age.

In 1996, at 18, She won the South African Championship.

In 2000, Her team came in fifth at the Sydney Olympic Games. That same year, She won the gold medal for the 200m backstroke event at the "Marenostrum" international swimming meeting in Monaco. This is when she met Prince Albert for the first time, He was presiding over the international competition.

In 2002, She won three gold medals at the swimming World Cup (50m and 100m crawl, 4x100m relay) and the silver medal during the Manchester Commonwealth Games (4x100m medley relay).

In 2007, She ceased competing after qualifying for the Beijing Olympics.

Her father, Mr. Michael Wittstock, was born in 1946 and is actually a sales manager.

Her mother, Mrs. Lynette Wittstock (1959), is a retired swimming instructor.

Charlene was born at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, She is eldest child of Michael Wittstock and Lynette Wittstock, Wittstock family also from Germany. She have two brothers is calling as Gareth and Sean her family, Her brother is a coffee house businessman in Monaco, Another brother as a promotions and events businessman in South Africa. Her great-great-grandparents is a emigrated to South Africa from the Pomeranian village of Zerrenthin in northern Germany in 1861 to escape hardship. In South Africa, the Wittstocks worked as handyworkers and unsuccessfully prospected for diamonds.

She studied at Tom Newby Primary school in Benoni, South Africa.
