Brian BlessedOBE (BLES-id; born 9 October 1936) is an English actor. He is known for his distinctive bushy beard, booming voice, and exuberant personality and performances. He portrayed PC "Fancy" Smith in Z-Cars; Augustus in the 1976 BBC television production of I, Claudius; King Richard IV in the first series of Blackadder; Prince Vultan in Flash Gordon; Bustopher Jones and Old Deuteronomy in the 1981 original London production of Cats at the New London Theatre; Thomas Beaufort, Duke of Exeter, in Henry V; Boss Nass in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Men Brian Blessed is an English actor, known for his sonorous voice and "hearty, king-sized portrayals" The son of William Blessed, a socialist miner, and Hilda Wall, Blessed was born at the Montague Hospital in the town of Mexborough, England. He attended Bolton on Dearne Secondary Modern School, but after his father suffered an industrial accident, he was forced to leave school early at 14 and spent several years working at a variety of jobs, ranging from undertaker to plasterer's assistant. At the age of eighteen, he suffered a nervous breakdown, from which he gradually recovered with the help of friends and family. He completed his National Service as a parachutist in the Royal Air Force. He began his acting training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, alongside Patrick Stewart. He has written about his early life in his autobiography, Dynamite Kid (1992). An early role was that of PC 'Fancy' Smith in the BBC police drama Z-Cars from 1962 As it says in the introduction to Brian Blessed's book Nothing's Impossible, "Brian Blessed's life has been full of incident and advent I met Brian Blessed at the Outdoor Show held at the Birmingham NEC in March 2006. His large audience were kept spellbound as he gave a highly entertaining talk about his boyhood years growing up in Yorkshire, his dreams that he was determined to fulfil, stories about his acting career, and amazing tales about his Everest adventures. He ended with his fantastic 'Stars in their Eyes' impression of Pavarotti that finally brought the house down!! Since discovering that several of his friends had cerebral palsy, Blessed has become a tireless supporter of the charity SCOPE. Another side to Brian Blessed's life is his love of exploration and adventure. he has climbed many mountains including Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Aconcagua in the Andes.
