THE KEFRI BOARD OF DIRECTORS PROFILE

In line with the Science, Technology & Innovation Act of 2013, the State Corporations Act Cap 466 of 1986 and the Interpretation and General Provisions Act Cap 2 Laws of Kenya the KEFRI Board of Directors is responsible for the exercise of the Institute’s functions under the Forest Conservation & Management Act of 2016.

It comprises of the Chairman, five (5) independent Directors, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry, and The Cabinet Secretary in charge of The National Treasury and their respective Alternates. The KEFRI Board also consists of the Director-General of the National Commission for Science, Technology & Innovation and his Alternate; the Chief Conservator of Forests and his Alternate; the Inspector-General of State Corporations & his Alternate; and the Director/CEO of KEFRI.

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) is the highest-ranking military officer in the Kenya Defence Forces and the principal military adviser to the President of Kenya and the National Security Council. The CDF outranks all respective heads of each service branch and has operational command authority over the service branches. He leads the meetings and coordinates the efforts of the Service Commander, comprising the CDF, the Commander of the Kenya Army and Kenya Air Force, Kenya Navy and the Commandant of Military Intelligence. The CDF has offices in Ulinzi House. Following the 2010 Constitution, the Chief of the General Staff was replaced with the Chief of the Defence Forces.[1]

Mwathethe: From Shimo La Tewa to KDF General

On April 17, 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe and further extended his time of service on May 6, 2019, for one year.

Mwathethe, who is the highest-ranking military officer, has been tasked to protect the country both internally and externally.

He also advises the president on matters concerning security before the president makes the final decision.

Mwathethe has held various command appointments including; vice chief of the defence forces, commander Kenya Navy, deputy commander Kenya Navy, Kenya Navy logistics commander, base commander in Mtongwe and fleet commander.

The Malindi-born general has also served as a military observer in Iraq and Yugoslavia.
