The year of 2022 has been a remarkable one for Janora McDuffie ’99, an actress, voiceover artist, and host. The alumna catches up with Catalyze about the past eight months, which have included movie deals, hosting Kia’s launch event in Phoenix for their first-ever electric vehicle, attending Pride Celebrations at the White House and Vice President Harris’s residence, announcing the Institute for Responsible Citizenship’s 20th anniversary celebration at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and, of course, serving as the first African American and openly gay female announcer for the 94th Academy Awards.

Biography and career[]

Janora McDuffie was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After that, McDuffie worked as a management consultant for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young in Atlanta, Georgia. However, after two years, she decided to move to California to pursue a career in acting.

Starting her career in 2001, McDuffie has appeared in films like The Pink House, Issues, Speechless, and Waiting for Tomorrow. She has also appeared in numerous TV shows. McDuffie portrayed another nurse an episode of The Event (2010), a series which has featured fellow 24 actors Ian Anthony Dale, Željko Ivanek, Bill Smitrovich, Gonzalo Menendez, Necar Zadegan, and Omid Abtahi.

McDuffie is also a host and voice-over artist.
