Heather Steans

Heather A. Steans chairs the Steans Family Foundation.

From 2008 through February, 2021 Heather represented Illinois’ 7th District in the State Senate.  In the state senate, she chaired the Appropriations One Committee and led budget negotiations.  She passed numerous complicated legislative initiatives, including marriage equality, taxing and regulating cannabis, reforming the state’s Medicaid program and nursing home regulations, and improving the environment by reducing mercury waste and creating commercial composting capabilities.

Heather graduated from Princeton with a B.A. in Urban Studies and received her M.A. in Public Policy from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her professional career has focused on government finance, economic development, and education reform. She is the former budget director of the Wisconsin Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations, served as a strategic planner with Chicago Public Schools and was a consultant with Ernst & Young.

Heather Adeline Steans (born May 8, 1963) is a former Democratic member of the Illinois Senate, representing the 7th district. She was appointed after winning a special primary election that followed the mid-term resignation of her predecessor, Senator Carol Ronen. She resigned from office on January 19, 2021 after 12 years in office.

Early life

Steans was born on May 8, 1963, in Lake Forest, Illinois. Her father, Harrison I. Steans, was a wealthy banker who founded a bank holding company he later sold to JPMorgan Chase. Eventually becoming a billionaire, in 1994 he founded Financial Investments Corporation, which invests the Steans family wealth.[1][2]

Financial Investments Corporation is now run by Steans's sister Jennifer, and has recently invested in Asia-focused private equity firms.[3] Financial Investments Corporation also is actively invested in the banking and energy (oil and gas) industries,[4] and had an investment in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) services company Liberty Oilf

Heather Steans (Democratic Party) was a member of the Illinois State Senate, representing District 7. She assumed office in 2008. She left office on January 31, 2021.

Steans (Democratic Party) ran for re-election to the Illinois State Senate to represent District 7. She won in the general election on November 3, 2020.

Steans resigned on January 31, 2021, stating, "it's time for fresh faces and new energy."[1]

Biography

Heather Sterns was born on May 8, 1963 in Lake Forest, IL. She received her B.A. in urban studies from Princeton University. She went on to receive her M.A. in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. As of November 2019, her professional experience included working as the strategic planning director for Chicago Public Schools and budget director for the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.[2]
