American microwave physicist

Louis Wright Roberts (September 1, 1913 – November 3, 1995) was an African American[1]microwave physicist. In the 1960s, he was the chief of the Microwave Laboratory at NASA'sElectronics Research Center. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked at the United States Department of Transportation'sJohn A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, beginning in senior research positions and ultimately becoming the director of the center. His research focused on optics and microwave engineering.

Early life and education

Louis Wright Roberts was born on September 1, 1913, in Jamestown, New York, to Dora Catherine Wright and Louis Lorenzo Roberts.[2][3] Roberts earned his bachelor's degree from Fisk University in 1935 and his master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1937.[2] He studied for a doctoral degree at the University of Michigan from 1939 to 1941, later completing his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1946.[4]&

Biography

Louis W. Roberts was born on 1 September 1913 in Jamestown, New York. Roberts was educated at Fisk University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1935. He earned a Master of Science from the University of Michigan in 1937. Roberts earned eleven patents for electronic devices and is the author of papers on electromagnetism, optics, and microwaves.

During Robert's career, he served as chief of the Optics and Microwave Laboratory in the Electronics Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In addition, he served as Director of Research for Microwave Associates from 1950 and was Director of Energy and Environment at the Transportation System Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1977. Louis W. Roberts also founded and was president of a microwave company. His research interests focused on microwave and optical techniques and components, plasma research, solid state component and circuit development.

Louis Melville Roberts (December 15, 1879 – February 11, 1958) was an American-Canadian politician from Alberta.

Early life

Louis Melville Roberts was born December 15, 1879, to Scottish parents in Cedar County, Iowa.[1] He attended the University of Iowa completing a Bachelor of Laws.[1] He married Helen Atkinson on July 12, 1906, and had two children together.[1]

Roberts constructed "Roberts Block", a three-storey brick warehouse on 11th Avenue in Calgary in 1909, which remains standing to this day.[2][3]

Political life

Roberts was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 1909 Alberta general election, for the Alberta Liberal Party. During his campaign, he was accused of winning the High River nomination under suspect circumstances. He would win a hotly contested election knocking off futur
