Peter was the son of Hermann and Auguste van Pels. The family was Jewish and lived in Osnabrück (Germany). In 1937, Peter's parents decided to leave because of the Nazis' antisemitism. The family moved to Amsterdam.
Only a handful of pictures of Peter have survived. In the only photo of him taken in Amsterdam, he is repairing a chair. It is believed that in 1942, he was taking a course in furniture upholstery.
When the number of call-ups for forced labour in Nazi Germany increased, the Van Pels family felt it was time to go into hiding in the Secret Annex. Peter's father worked for Otto Frank and they had agreed that there was room for two families.
‘Rather soft, shy, gawky youth; can't expect much from his company.’
Tinkering and doing carpentry
Peter and his parents arrived at the hiding place on 13 July 1942, one week after the Frank family. His parents allowed him to bring Mouschi, his tomcat, to the annex.

Hermann van Pels was born in the German city of Osnabrück. His father's family originally came from Groningen (the Netherlands). As a result, Hermann had the Dutch nationality.
On 25 December 1925, Hermann married Auguste Röttgen. We do not know how the two met. Just a year later, their son Peter was born. From 1932 onwards, Hermann worked as a representative for his father's company. The company traded in butcher's supplies.
In 1937, Hermann and Auguste decided to leave Osnabrück. They did not see a future for themselves in Hitler's antisemitic Germany. Hermann and Auguste decided to go to the Netherlands. Over the following years, Hermann's father, brother, and three sisters would follow them to Amsterdam. The Van Pels family lived close to the Frank family.
Herbal specialist
In Amsterdam, Hermann and his brother-in-law set up a textile trading company. In early 1939, he left this company and joined Otto Frank. His knowledge of meat and sausage herbs was essential to Otto's second business: Pectacon. Pectacon traded in herbs, spices, and later also in surrogates.

List of people associated with Anne Frank
Anne Frank (12 June 1929 – February 1945)[1] was a German-born Jewish girl who, along with her family and four other people, hid in the second and third floor rooms at the back of her father's Amsterdam company during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Helped by several trusted employees of the company, the group of eight survived in the achterhuis (literally "back-house", usually translated as "secret annex") for more than two years before they were betrayed, and arrested. Anne kept a diary from 12 June 1942 until 1 August 1944, three days before the residents of the annex were arrested. Anne mentioned several times in her writings that her sister Margot Frank also kept a diary, but no trace of Margot's diary was ever found.
After spending time in both Westerbork and Auschwitz, Anne and her elder sister Margot were eventually transported to Bergen-Belsen, which was swept by a massive typhusepidemic that began in the camp in January 1945. The two sisters died, evidently a few days apart, sometime in
