Masako (雅子, born Masako Owada (小和田雅子, Owada Masako); 9 December 1963) is Empress of Japan as the wife of EmperorNaruhito.

Born in Tokyo, Masako was educated at Belmont High School in Massachusetts before attending Harvard College, earning a B.A., magna cum laude, in economics.[1] She also studied law at the University of Tokyo and international relations at Balliol College, Oxford. She then worked for Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a diplomat.

Masako met Crown Prince Naruhito in 1986. They married in 1993; their only child, Aiko, Princess Toshi, was born in 2001. The birth fueled the ongoing Japanese imperial succession debate, which had resulted in some politicians holding a favorable view on rescinding agnatic primogeniture imposed by World War II allies on the constitution of Japan. However, with the birth of a son to Naruhito's brother, Prince Fumihito, in 2006, no amendments were made and Aiko remains ineligible to inherit the throne, so she cannot succeed her father.[2]

Princess Masako: Prisoner of the Chrysanthemum Throne (ISBN 1585425680) is a controversial 2006 book by Australianinvestigative journalistBen Hills. Billed as "The Tragic True Story of Japan's Crown Princess", the book drew criticism from the Imperial Household Agency and the government of Japan over its supposed inaccuracies, and Hills' claims to have received death threats.[1] The English version was published in Japan in September 2007.

A translation was to be published in Japan by the country's largest publisher, Kodansha. But Kodansha demanded that some of the contents which was pointed out by Imperial household[2] to be revised due to "substantial number of factual errors". Hills refused and Kodansha, in response, decided not to publish the book. Daughter of a Japanese diplomat, Masako Owada grew up in several countries, including the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. Receiving an undergraduate education in Moscow, New York, and Tokyo, the Crown Princess graduated from Belmont (Massachusetts) High School and from Harvard University in 1985 with an economics degree. She did graduate work at the University of Tokyo before entering the Japanese foreign service, where she worked on North American affairs. She married Crown Prince Naruhito, heir to Japan's Chrysanthemum Throne, in 1993. The Crown Princess had a baby girl, Princess Aiko, December 1, 2001. A change in Japanese law would be required for the baby to ascend to the throne since females are currently forbidden. Crown Prince Naruhito is the last male in the line. The Crown Princess speaks English, French, and German, and enjoys music, hiking, skiing, and tennis.
