Why 'Dracula Untold' Is Worth Revisiting as an Intriguing Monster Origin

Are you interested in a vampire movie that was intended to establish a cinematic universe of its own, full of exciting action sequences, deep human ties, and a dark fate that will turn our hero into a villain in under two hours? No, we're not talking about Morbiushere, though, ironically, both films were written by the same duo of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless of Lost In Space fame... We're actually talking about Dracula Untold, a monster origin story that, honestly, gets a bit of a bad rap, especially for how well put together the whole thing is.

Originally planned as the initial launching point for Universal Pictures’ Dark Universe franchise (you know, before they went with The Mummy reboot instead), Dracula Untold stands best on its own, primarily as a historical fantasy epic. Not only are the action sequences in this Dracula prequel pretty phenomenal, and the cinematography gorgeous, but Luke Evans’ underappreciated portrayal of Vlad Țepeș, a man haunted

Dracula Untold

2014 film

Dracula Untold is a 2014 American action horror film directed by Gary Shore in his feature film debut and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.[4] The plot creates an origin story for the title character, rather than using the storyline of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. In this adaptation, Dracula is the historical figure Vlad III "the Impaler" Dracula and transforms into his monstrous alter ego to protect his family and kingdom from OttomanSultanMehmed II. Luke Evans portrays the title character, with Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Art Parkinson, and Charles Dance cast in supporting roles. Principal photography began in Northern Ireland on August 5, 2013.

Universal Pictures released the film in regular and IMAX cinemas on October 10, 2014. Dracula Untold grossed $217 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics.

Dracula Untold: A Near-Perfect Gothic Retelling

This weekend Dracula Untold premiered. Of course, being the Gothic novel and film fan that I am, I had to see it in the theatre. I was highly impressed by the film and would give it 9 out of 10 stars. This film is very much the Dracula movie I have long been waiting for. In my opinion, it is the best Dracula film since Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).

Luke Evans stars as Vlad Tepes in Dracula Untold.

Why am I so enthusiastic about this film? Because as much as I love the Bram Stoker novel, the story has never adequately been placed in its historical context in a film—at least not with the vampire aspect included. The only other film I have seen that depicts Vlad Tepes’ story in detail (there may be others I haven’t seen) is Dracula: The Dark Prince (2000) starring Christopher Brand, but that was purely about the historical Vlad Tepes. Dracula Untold goes back to the historical roots of the story while cleverly weaving in the legendary and supernatural aspects of the tale. The result is a superb
