Unforgettable Laos
2.1 The French Entered Laos
The French officially entered Laos on November 10, 1861. In 1872, hordes of Chinese red flag, yellow flag and multicolor flag troops invaded the northern part of Laos. The French leaders contacted the Hmong and recruited them to fight against the invaders. The successful operation increased French confidence in the Hmong. In May 1893, the French used their armed forces to remove Laos from Siam’s control and put Laos under their own control as a French colony. They first named Chong Kai Moua as the first “Kaitong” (subdistrict chief) of the Hmong subdistrict of Nonghet, and then Lor Blia Yao (1913-1934). As administrators of Laos, the French next selected Touby LYFOUNG to be the Nonghet subdistrict chief until 1945, during their war against Germany and Japan, and right before their war against North-Vietnam. After losing those two wars, the French were forced to move out of the Indochina peninsula per the Geneva Treaty.

1. Chao Saykham Southakakoumane
Chao Saykham Southakakoumane was born in 1918, the son of Chao Sayavong and Mrs. Douangdy from the Muang Phuan principality. He had 12 siblings: Chao Xoua, Chao Ouane, Chao Pheng, Chao Damdouane, Chao Souvath, Chao Sithavong, Chao Sisouphanh, Chao Saykham, Chao Sonh, Chao Siphay, Chao Atao and Chao Phengdy.
Chao Saykham went to high school in Vietnam and graduated from the law school in Vientiane. In 1945, he was sent to Nonghet, Xieng Khouang Province by the French to be the Naikong (district chief) with administrative control over the Hmong people in that district. This gave him a chance to get better acquainted with the Hmong and their culture.
On March 9, 1945 Japanese invaded Laos. Chao Saykham had to retreat in the mountain, along with some French and under the protection of the Hmong led by Tasseng Touby. Thanks to his good relationship with the Hmong and his strong support for their causes, Chao Saykham was safe from any injuries caused by the Lao Issara and the Japanese. Touby Lyfoung
Touby Lyfoung (* 1917 in Nong Het; † 1979) war ein Politiker und General der Hmong. Der in der Provinz Xieng Khouang geborene Politiker wurde eine nationale Berühmtheit. Während seiner langen Karriere, welche unter der Kolonialsherrschaft Frankreichs begann und bis zur kommunistischen Machtübernahme 1975 andauerte, unterstützte er das Königliche Lao Gouvernement und die amerikanische Beteiligung am Laotischen Bürgerkrieg.

[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Touby Lyfoung war der Sohn von Ly Xia Foung, ein respektierter Mann in der Hmong-Gemeinschaft von Laos, und Schwiegerenkel von Lo Bliayao, einer der ersten Hmong, welcher eine Führungsposition in der laotischen Regierung erreichte. Von einer reichen und bekannten Familie abstammend war es Touby möglich, Schulen im Tiefland sowie eine Universität im benachbarten Vietnam zu besuchen.
