Mark Lindsay: Coolest Songs in the World

Mark Lindsay is the former lead singer and co-founder of Paul Revere & the Raiders, and the voice on 17 Top 40 hits (Indian Reservation, Arizona, Kicks, Hungry) from the group's inception through 1975, and during a solo career as well. Mark Lindsay has led a pretty interesting life, to say the least. He's been on more than 700 network TV shows, has owned a restaurant, and has had radio shows in Portland, Oregon.

Born in Oregon, raised in Idaho, Mark Lindsay began his career as the rockabilly singer in Freddy Chapman's Idaho Playboys. He and bandmates Dick and "Mooney" White, along with Paul Revere Dick and Jerry Labrum, soon formed The Downbeats... which became Paul Revere and the Raiders after they got their first contract with Gardena Records in 1961. Seventeen Top 20 hits later, with Mark Lindsay on all the lead vocals (including his own hit "Arizona"); it's still hard for him t

Track 3 - Everything About You - This is a love song with a really heavy rhythm.  The bass and drums just lock in and grind.  Combine the hypnotic grind with the fuzz guitar solo and the intense licks on the edges of the song and you have a very enjoyable 2:56 worth of music.  Lest you think Mark is showing his sensitive side on this track, we learn that one of the things he loves most about this girl is her supermodel walk.  Dude, I must applaud.  If singing about wanting to hear a girl’s trashy talk helps you make headway with women, all I can say is, well done my brother, well done.

Track 4 - Rainy Day Children - Well, not every song on an album can be a killer jam.  This song is not my favorite, although it was interesting to listen for the name of different geographic locations.  Now, to be fair, the song seems to be talking about drug addiction among young people.  So, anything that brings the plight of people who, for whatever reason, are addicted and need help to the forefront of society’s consciousness  should be considered a good thing.

Track 5 - Ghos

Mark Lindsay was born on March 9, 1942, in Eugene, Oregon. He was the second of eight children. The family moved to Idaho when he was young.

Lindsay began performing at the age of fifteen with local bands. He was tapped to sing in a band called Freddy Chapman and the Idaho Playboys after he won a local talent contest. After Chapman left the area, Lindsay saw the other band members and a new member, Paul Revere, playing at a local I.O.O.F. Hall. He persuaded the current band to allow him to sing a few songs with them. The next day he was working at his regular job at a bakery when Paul Revere came in to buy supplies for a hamburger restaurant that he owned. This chance meeting began their professional relationship.

Lindsay became lead singer and saxophone player in a band with Revere and several others. He suggested they call themselves "The Downbeats" after a magazine with the same title. They made some demo tapes in 1960 in Boise, Idaho, and signed with a record company called Gardena Records. Paul Revere and the Raiders scored their first national hit with the piano/
