Biography

A S Byatt was born Antonia Susan Drabble in Sheffield in 1936, the eldest daughter of a judge. Her younger sister is the writer Margaret Drabble. She took a first class degree in English at Newnham College, Cambridge. After doing postgraduate work at Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and Oxford University, she lectured at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martins) and University College, London. In 1959, she married Ian Byatt, an economist. They had a son and a daughter. They were divorced in 1969 and she married Peter Duffy. They had two daughters. Her earlier writings had comparatively little success and she was outshone by her younger sister but, starting in the 1990s, when she won the Booker Prize for Possession: a Romance , her success has far eclipsed her sister’s. Her writing is highly intellectual – it assumes a familiarity with English literature – but she also tells a wonderful story and makes her characters alive and interesting. Dame Antonia Susan Byatt (1936) is the author of an extensive body of work that includes dozens of (historical) novels, biographies, short stories and critical essays. She made her name with the novel ‘Possession’, in which she describes how the paths followed by two young academics merge with those of the (fictional) nineteenth-century poets they are researching. In her work Byatt unites great erudition with remarkable imaginative power. Her writing is influenced by Marcel Proust and George Eliot, among others. Writing, for Byatt, is a “lifeline”. She calls it “one of life’s essentials, just like breathing”.

Byatt has a deep fondness for art. A central theme in many of her works is the way artists live life through their artistic expression. She focuses on the creative process itself, which fascinates her greatly. Byatt explores a range of genres, literary forms and subjects to immerse the reader in the history of European thinking, taking the big questions of science, history and identity as her starting point.

Born in Sheffield, England, Byatt was educated at boarding schools before going to Cambridge to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. She followed this with further degrees at Bryn Mawr College and Oxford. Byatt published her first novel, Shadow of a Sun, in 1964. This marked the start of a prolific writing career, with output that included fiction, short story collections, biographies, essays, and the editing of scholarly collections. Byatt taught in the Extra-Mural Department of London University and the Central School of Art and Design, and in 1972 became a full-time lecturer in English and American Literature at University College, London. She was active as a lecturer until 1983, when she chose to focus on writing full time.

Byatt won her first major literary award in 1986, when her novel Still Life was awarded the PEN/Macmillan Silver Pen Award. Since then, she has won the Booker Prize and the Commonwealth Write
