On October 4th, 2014, Signe Toly Anderson was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame Class of 2014. On January 28th, 2016, Signe passed away after longtime health issues and a heart condition had plagued her. Here we give you a lovely video from our-then interview with Signe, and offer a few thoughts and images to reflect on the life and the times of the original female singer in Jefferson Airplane.

Vocalist Signe Anderson grew up in Portland where she sang both folk and jazz. After a trip to San Francisco, she joined the Jefferson Airplane. Their debut album “Takes Off” was both a critically acclaimed album with fans and critics. Shortly after she gave birth to her child, she returned to Portland. Signe sang with Carl Smith & the Natural Gas Company for 9 years. Over the years she has been invited to guest on numerous live performances by the KBC Band and the Jefferson Starship. —

Biography:
One of the original members of Jefferson Airplane, Signe Toly was a respected solo jazz and folk singer before joining the band. Soon after joining the Airplane, she married the Matrix's lighting director (and former Prankster) Jerry Anderson. It was her departure in 1966, following the birth of her first daughter, which bought Grace Slick into the band.

Following her departure from the band, she returned to Oregon, where she sang for nine years with a ten-piece band. Then, in c1975, she was diagnosed with cancer, which she eventually beat. By 1977, she had married a local building contractor, Michael Alois Ettlin, and had decided to retire from singing.

Signe Toly Anderson (SIG-nee;[1] born Signe Toly; September 15, 1941 – January 28, 2016) was an American singer who was one of the founding members of the American rock band Jefferson Airplane.

Early life

Signe Toly was born in Seattle, Washington on September 15, 1941.[2] Her parents divorced when she was three, and her mother raised her in Portland, Oregon.[3] Toly sang in a band with three male musicians she had known in high school, under the name Three Guys and a Gal. The group performed at a campaign event for John F. Kennedy in November 1959.[4]

Jefferson Airplane

Toly was a locally-known and well-respected jazz and folk singer in San Francisco, where Marty Balin heard her perform and invited her to join his band, soon named Jefferson Airplane.[2]

Soon after joining the Airplane, Signe married one of the Merry Pranksters, Jerry Anderson; the marriage lasted from 1965 to 1974. She sang on the first Jefferson Airplane album Jeffers
