Areas of Research & Specialization

Dr. Moore serves as the Director of Political Outreach for the Tom McCall Center for Civic Engagement.

He teaches a variety of international classes at Pacific. His introductory class to international relations, the U.S. in World Affairs, studies Thucydides'  2,400-year-old History of the Peloponnesian War, as well as the daily New York Times. Other classes look at the Middle East, international political economy, and U.S. foreign policy and conflict.

Professor Moore's other teaching areas include state and local politics and political parties. He has helped place interns with political campaigns, government officials, and businesses all over the Pacific Northwest.

Jim Moore has been writing poetry for more than five decades.His most recent book, Prognosis, was published in 2021 by Graywolf Press. In 2012 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Underground: New & Selected Poems is also available now from Graywolf Press. His new book of poetry, Enter, will be available from Graywolf in May, 2025.

He has won the Minnesota Book Award for his poetry four times. Jim has received grants from the Bush Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Boards, the Loft Mcknight.  His poems have appeared three times in Pushcart Prize Editions as well as in many magazines, including The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, American Poetry Review, Harper’s The Kenyon Review, The Threepenny Review, and Water-Stone Review.

Jim lives in Minneapolis and Spoleto, Italy with his wife the photographer JoAnn Verburg. He taught in the Hamline University MFA Program in St. Paul, Minnesota and was often a Visiting Professor at the Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado

James Moore [later Carrick Moore] (1762–1860) was a biographer and surgeon.[1] He had a particular interest in the new practice of vaccination, which he strongly advocated. He was a friend and supporter of Edward Jenner. Moore succeeded Jenner as president of the National Vaccine Institute.[2]

Biography

James Moore was born on 21 December 1762 in Glasgow, one of eight sons and three daughters of John Moore, physician, and Jean Simson.
