Obituary – John Paramor

During his time on the fairways at some of the world’s biggest championships, Paramor had many interactions with the greats of the game such as Seve Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods as well as with the latest generation of players.Paramor, for instance, was on hand in the final round of The Open in 2017 when eventual champion Jordan Spieth famously dropped his ball onto and then played from the practice ground at Royal Birkdale. In addition to his work on the fairways, he acted as an adviser to The R&A’s Rules of Golf Committee from 1998, helping form the written Rules and their application, particularly on the professional circuits.Paramor was also very supportive of the development of The R&A’s refereeing schools – now known as the Tournament Administrators and Referees Seminar (TARS) – and undertook presentations to highlight life as a referee on Tour and was part of the team that took attendees through practical situations.Paramor administered the sport with the highest level of skill, character and integrity. John Paramor: Highly-respected former golf referee dies aged 67

One of European golf's most recognisable figures, the highly respected former referee John Paramor, has died aged 67.

Paramor's distinguished career spanned more than six decades after joining the European Tour as an administrator in 1976. He was a competent golfer and a former Surrey amateur champion.

But it was as a referee that he made his mark and was regularly seen by television audiences adjudicating on rulings involving some of the game's biggest names, including Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros.

Paramor famously ruled against the legendary Spaniard at the 1994 Volvo Masters, where Ballesteros was seeking a free drop from a difficult lie that he claimed had been caused by a "burrowing animal".

In 1989 Paramor became the European Tour's chief referee and his work with the R&A and United States Golf Association influenced many significant changes to the sport's rules.

DP World Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said: "Legend is a word used too often in sport but,

John ‘JP’ Paramor remembered not only for his crushing handshake but his gentlemanly ways

In meeting John Paramor for the first time, I naturally reached out my arm to shake the hand of the European Tour’s leading referee.

What I did not expect was the crushing nature of his handshake.

No, it was not as though Paramor was in any way proving a point as it was just the nature of this powerfully built rules official, so much so, that for each and every other time I shook the hand of ‘JP’, as he was affectionately known, I was prepared for the force of his handshake.

It came as a shock today driving from Oman and just a short distance from going through the procedures of entering the UAE to learn ‘JP’ had passed away (February 17th).

I was new to the European Tour and still finding my journalistic feet when first meeting both ‘JP’ and his fellow European Tour Chief Referee colleague, Andy McFee. They were professional golf’s leading referees.  They were to be respected and their word on any rules matter was final.
