John Camp and Michele Cook are sitting in the garden outside their home in Santa Fe, N.M., talking by phone about “Uncaged,” first in their “The Singular Menace” trilogy.
The couple’s debut in the red-hot young adult genre is already a success. Their thriller about 16-year-old Shay Remby, who’s looking for her animal-rights activist brother, hit the New York Times bestseller list Sunday, less than a week after it was published by Knopf ($21.99).
“Uncaged” is a fast-paced, sometimes dark story with high-energy scenes, everything you’d expect from a book co-written by Camp, who writes bestselling adult thrillers as John Sandford. Cook, who has written screenplays, brings authenticity to Shay. She’s a character who’s smart and fearless and loves her brother.

John J. Mellencamp[1] (born October 7, 1951), previously known as Johnny Cougar, John Cougar, and John Cougar Mellencamp, is an American singer-songwriter. He is known for his brand of heartland rock, which emphasizes traditional instrumentation. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008,[2] followed by an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018.[3]
