Loren Janes was an American stuntman, notable for his work in Hollywood films, particularly those starring Steve McQueen, including Bullitt, Nevada Smith, and The Hunter.

One of the key figures in the development of modern cinematic stunt design, improved safety procedures and co-founder of the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures & Televsion, Loren Janes ranks alongside Dar Robinson, Hal Needham and Yakima Canutt for his contributions to movie stunt work.

James has lent his athletic skills to many amazing stunt sequences in over 130 feature films, and has doubled for some of Hollywood's biggest stars including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Jack Nicholson and even Debbie Reynolds in a career spanning nearly half a century. He has contributed his talents to such spectacular films as The Ten Commandments (1956), Spartacus (1960), The Magnificent Seven (1960), Planet of the Apes (1968), The Towering Inferno (1974) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984). Ruggedly handsome, Janes has also had minor acting roles in over a dozen Hollywood feature films.

In 2001, well known western actor L.Q. Jones presented Loren Janes with the Golden Boot Award for his lifetime contribution to the western film genre.

Loren Janes, prolific Hollywood stuntman who jumped from cliffs, trains and speeding cars, dies at 85

In film after film, Loren Janes leaped from speeding trains, jumped from towering cliffs and roared through city streets in gravity-defying car chases.

That’s him flying headlong into a saguaro cactus in “How the Was Won.” That’s him tumbling down a staircase alongside a drunken John Wayne in “McLintock!” And, yes, that’s him — not Steve McQueen — fishtailing down Taylor Street in San Francisco at 90 mph in “Bullitt.”

In a career that spanned decades and with a resume that included westerns, thrillers, comedies, dramas and sci-fi, Janes was the body double for everyone including Kirk Douglas and , the person the studio could count on when the script called for someone to be thrown from a window, dropped into the ocean or shot dead outside a saloon.

Loren Janes (October 1, 1931 – June 24, 2017) was an American stuntman, notable for his work in Hollywood films, particularly those starring Steve McQueen, including Bullitt, Nevada Smith, and The Hunter.^[1] He also co-founded the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures in 1961. In 1956, he was the first civilian to enter the United States Olympic Trials for pentathlon; he also competed in 1964.^[2] He is a member of the Hollywood Stuntmen's Hall of Fame.^[3]

He also has a footnote contribution to television, having played the role of Norman Chaney on the TV series L.A. Law. In the first scene of the first episode, Chaney is found dead, though his name appears for years in the name of the law firm.

Janes died at age 85 on June 24, 2017. He was said by his family to have suffered from Alzheimer's disease.^[4]^[5]
