Steve Clayton Biography
Steve is Microsoft's Chief Storyteller and oversees the company's Image and Culture division. It didn't start that way; he joined Microsoft in 1997 as a specialist pre-deals associate talking tech to large corporations and quickly realized he could translate nerd into something non-nerds could understand. That carried him all around the world, speaking with large and small groups on the allure of technology. And then he discovered blogging....and set up Geek in Disguise a blog to chronicle the story of Microsoft from where he sat. After a few thousand postings and a few of grants, Steve was invited to bring his narration to Redmond, Washington, and take on the position of Chief Storyteller. That is a condensed version of the story. Today, Steve works with teams throughout the enterprise to help the rest of the world understand Microsoft's story. I get to visit lots of interesting, unusual and hidden places inside of Microsoft so the idea of a blog post about my own workspace sounded incredibly boring when I thought about the lineup for this week’s schedule of posts about places. Then I decided it’d be another perspective about where and how we work at Microsoft and there were a few interesting angles I could take on the post – both visually and in text. You see, I have many “workspaces” and the one above is possibly the least exciting I can tell you about.
I’ll start off with the image above though – that’s literally my desk in the News Room which is located in our Red West campus. The open space area in which I work is home to the folks who own www.microsoft.com/news and the associated Twitter handles, media relations, photography, videos, and overall PR. We also have the team who manage our internal portal, MSW, the team who manage our Facebook presence and the Microsoft twitter handle. When Steve discovered blogging, he setup “Geek in Disguise” - a blog to tell the story of Microsoft from where he sat - inside Microsoft. A few thousand posts and a few awards later, Steve was invited to bring that storytelling to Microsoft’s HQ near Seattle and take on the Chief Storyteller role. Steve was the architect of the acclaimed “88 Acres” story that heralded a new direction for Microsoft’s corporate storytelling. Since then, Steve and the teams he has led have influenced everything from CEO keynotes, to coffee cups at Microsoft - all with a goal of transforming the culture of the company through storytelling.
