Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III has named Trev Alberts as his new director of athletics — an All-American University of Nebraska football player who has served in AD roles in Nebraska for the past 15 years.

Alberts, a former first-round NFL draft pick and ESPN broadcaster, has been the director of athletics at the University of Nebraska since 2021. He moved to Lincoln after serving 12 years as the AD at University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he transitioned the athletic program from Division II to Division 1, while leading an overhaul of its athletic facilities.

Welsh said Alberts’s strong business acumen, range of experience and leadership abilities make him the ideal choice to oversee A&M Athletics, which has more than 650 student-athletes competing in the Southeastern Conference in 20 varsity sports.

Trev Alberts is the athletic director at Texas A&M. After successful careers as a player and broadcaster, Alberts worked his way up in college athletics administration in the state he became a legend in, Nebraska. 

 

Alberts was the athletic director at the University of Nebraska from 2021-24. He had previously been the AD at Nebraska-Omaha since 2009. 

 

Alberts was a college football star for the Huskers. He earned the Dick Butkus Award, the Jack Lambert Trophy, and was recognized as a consensus All-American. 

 

Alberts then went on to play in the NFL after being the 5th overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. After spending three years with the Colts as a player, Trev retired after the 1996 season due to injuries. 

 

Following his retirement, Trev began working as a broadcaster when he signed with ESPN as an analyst for college football.

Trev Kendall Alberts (born August 8, 1970) is an American sports administrator and the director of athletics at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Alberts is a former American college and professional football player. He played college football for the University of Nebraska, and earned All-American honors at linebacker. He played professionally for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons, after having been fifth overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. Later, he became a television and print college football commentator, most notably working alongside Mark May on ESPN's College GameDay Scoreboard show. In January 2015, Alberts was among 15 players and two coaches selected to the College Football Hall of Fame. On July 14, 2021, it was announced that Alberts had been selected to return to Nebraska, his alma mater, to become the athletic director.
